The FitBone is a piece of unstable equipment. It primarily challenges the dog's balance system by engaging the core and stabiliser musculature to keep them balanced and their joints in place. It is a great tool for strengthening joints and stabilising muscles. In young dogs, unstable equipment can help to improve proprioception and neuromuscular communication.
How to use:
- Make sure your equipment is sufficiently inflated. It should neither be convex nor concave when seen from the side. Too inflated it will look too round in shape and risk rolling, while too deflated will cause it to further distort under your dog's weight.
- Ensure your dog stands evenly on the equipment with parallel paws, at an equal distance from the equipment's turning point to allow an even distribution of weight and to allow your dog to maintain their centre of gravity in their natural spot. Using the front/back side edges of equipment stretches the digital and carpal flexor tendons, and uses more of the front/back end.
- Always ensure you train on a non-slip surface.
- Make sure water if freely available at all times.
- If your dog starts to lose form in an exercise they previously performed well, they may be fatigued or bored. Shorten your training sessions.
